Halloween can be such a fun time of year. People get so creative in the costumes they create and the foods they whip up! Though what some people choose to ignore, is that Halloween isn't an excuse to be a jerk. In college, and even in high school, people would get particularly handsy when they were dressed up for Halloween. Because of that, we made some graphics to remind people that
- Costumes are not consent. Regardless of what the person is wearing, the character they are dressed as, or if you are attracted to them, it is no excuse to touch someone without their consent.
- Halloween potions are not consent. We say this often, but we thought it was important to remind people that using potions (or alcohol) to take advantage of someone is rape.
- Having conversations before, during, and after sexual activity is important! It makes the experience enjoyable for everyone and allows people to talk about what they want and where they want to set their own boundaries.
- Catcalling isn't cool. People don't walk around waiting to be verbally harassed. It is not a compliment and it needs to stop!
We know a lot of people feel the same way about Halloween, particularly about costumes not being consent, because that graphic was shared over 500 times on Facebook alone! We reached well over 60,000 people! We are glad the message is finally catching on in all different communities. This message isn't only relevant on Halloween though. People dress up for all sorts of reasons, but that doesn't give any of us the right to touch someone without their consent. We believe everyone deserves a lifetime free from harassment and assault. If you agree, follow us on Instagram to share messages like these with your followers, too!
